HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Though the Chargers hit the first basket, senior forward Alyssa Guyon sparked a six-point run on a fast break and then hit a second shot on the next possession to give AIC an early lead. Senior forward Dana Watts had the final basket of the run as well as another to put AIC ahead 8-4. New Haven scored on a pair of possessions to tie the game at the midpoint of the quarter.
  • The Chargers continued their run to take an 11-8 lead, forcing a timeout from the AIC bench; out of the stoppage, the hosts netted another lay-up and a pair of free throws to expand the edge. Another turnover put New Haven in a place to expand the lead, but senior guard Dominique Boyd jumped into a passing lane and laid in a fast break to stop the bleeding and cut the deficit to 15-10. The teams traded baskets through the end of the frame from there, with junior guard Rashana Siders hitting three straight bids before Guyon beat the buzzer with a three to tie the game 19-19 at the break.
  • Guyon sank another three to open the second stanza and put AIC back on top early; New Haven responded with a bucket from Allieyah Cubbage. Neither team scored on their next two possessions before Watts popped back a rebound to bring AIC's lead back to three. On the next possession, she added to the edge with a pair of free throws, giving the Yellow Jackets a 26-21 edge, their largest of the half to that point, with 6:43 remaining.
  • AIC twice expanded the lead to seven as they continued to attack the New Haven basket; after Watts forced a jumper through with 4:09 left to make the score 32-25, the Chargers called timeout. From the stoppage, Alexandria Kerr hit a three followed by two free throws to shrink AIC's lead to just two, but Watts buried a three to blunt the momentum; Siders did the same on AIC's next possession as well. A late miss by New Haven afforded AIC a fast break, and Boyd drew a foul and sank both free throws to send AIC to the break up 40-34.
  • In the third, neither team scored on their first possession; Guyon opened things up on AIC's second opportunity, hitting a lay-in from the right side. From there, New Haven had some opportunities from the line as AIC got into foul trouble, and hit four out of six free throws to cut the deficit to 42-38.
  • Siders hit a runner in the lane, but New Haven netted the next six points to tie the game. Watts drove the lane and put AIC back on top, but the Chargers sank a corner three out of the hands of Micah Womack to go ahead 47-46. Two more free throws extended the lead, but Brown sank a pull-up jumper, and then Guyon forced a turnover to give AIC the last possession of the frame; freshman guard Zoe Willis hit a layup to put AIC ahead 50-49 as the period expired.
  • Cubbage sank a layup on New Haven's second possession of the fourth quarter to give the Chargers an early lead, and Kerr knocked down a three in the corner on the next bid to put the hosts up 54-50. New Haven extended the edge to 58-52 with 5:50 left, and took a time out at that point.
  • The Yellow Jackets found some momentum as Guyon sank another three, and then the defense forced a shot clock violation. Watts converted a layup to tie the game, but Kerr responded with a lay-in of her own. AIC could not convert on either of the next two possessions, and New Haven managed to hang on to win, hitting free throws for the 68-59 final.
