Seniors dominate as women's basketball downs SCSU

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College women's basketball team defeated Southern Connecticut State 71-49 in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Tuesday, December 4 at Butova Gym.

Record: AIC improves to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in NE10 action, while SCSU falls to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in NE10 play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Yellow Jackets started the game on a 10-0 run in the first 5:47 of action.
  • The Owls responded with a 6-0 run to tighten the gap to four points.
  • At the end of the first quarter, AIC had a six point edge over SCSU, 14-8.
  • Similarly to the first, AIC went on a 12-0 run to start the second quarter. Seniors Dana Watts and Alyssa Guyon each scored six points during the run.
  • AIC entered the half ahead of the Owls, 26-15.
  • The Owls came out of the break looking to claw back into the game, and with 3:38 remaining in the third quarter, SCSU cut the Yellow Jacket lead to five after redshirt junior forward Bridget Sharnick converted the three-pointer for the Owls.
  • The Yellow Jackets would answer with a 7-0 run to close out the quarter leading 41-29.
  • The fourth quarter saw AIC pull away, outscoring the Owls by 10 to win 71-49.

BUZZWORTHY:

  • AIC has not trailed at any point in two consecutive games.
  • Watts set a season high in rebounds with 17.
  • Senior guard Dominique Boyd set a season high in points with 15. Boyd was four shy from matching her career high; she had 19 last year against Southern Connecticut.
  • The trio of seniors combined for 61 of the 71 points scored by the Yellow Jackets.
