Women's soccer clinches playoff berth after defeating Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, Vermont - The American International College women's soccer team defeated Saint Michael's College 5-2 on Saturday, October 27, with a hat trick from red shirt freshman Anniina Sankoh to lead the way.

HOW IT HAPPENED:.

  • Redshirt freshman midfielder Anniina Sankoh scored the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute, giving AIC a 1-0 lead at the half.
  • Goals came fast in the second half; senior midfielder Federica Frew extended the lead to two in the 48th minute. Sankoh was there for the assist. Three minutes later the Purple Knights would respond. Junior forward Madeleine Morse scored the goal, making it a one score game.
  • In the 53rd and 58th minute, Sankoh would score her second and third goal, growing the Yellow Jackets lead to 4-1.
  • Saint Michael's would score again in the 62nd minute, making the score 4-2.
  • Senior midfielder Johanna Englund would put the game away with a goal in the 81st minute.
  • The Yellow Jackets went on to win 5-2, keeping their playoff hopes alive.

BUZZWORTHY:

  • Sankoh tied the AIC women's soccer goals and points record for a single-game with a hat trick, one assist and seven total points. Mariah Shade had an identical performance on October 13, 2012 vs UMass Lowell.

NEXT UP:

  • The Yellow Jackets have clinched a playoff berth, but will have to wait until the last regular season games are played on Sunday, October 28 to know if their opponent will be Franklin Pierce University or Southern New Hampshire University.
