Volleyball splits Saturday at Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire - The American International College volleyball team faced offed against Saint Anselm and LIU Post on Saturday, September 30. The Yellow Jackets split the day as they beat the Hawks, 3-2, and lost to the Pioneers, 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE:
  • After dropping the first two points of the match, the Hawks rallied off seven points to force an AIC timeout. Out of the timeout, the run did not stop as the Yellow Jackets used their second timeout with the score at 11-2. They would score one more before AIC broke a 12-0 run. Saint Anselm took the first set by a score of 25-14.
  • The Yellow Jackets got things going in the second set as they went up early, 9-3. The teams battled back and forth, but the Yellow Jackets kept their early lead and took the second set 25-19.
  • All knotted up at one set, the Hawks jumped out to a 5-2 advantage before AIC took the 6-5 lead. It was knotted at 20 when the Hawks took three of the next four and were just two points away from taking the set. AIC rallied back and made it 24-23 before the Hawks took the next three points and the set, 26-24.
  • Trying to force a fifth set, AIC went up in the fourth set, 15-10. The Hawks tried to soar back, but they were just short as the Yellow Jackets forced the fifth set, 25-19.
  • The Hawks started the fifth set by defending their nest as they took the 4-0 lead and forced an AIC timeout. AIC used that timeout to refocus and came out and took the 6-5 lead.
  • The score was 10-9 when the Hawks called a timeout. The timeout back-fired on the Hawks as the Yellow Jackets took the next five points to win the match.


GAME TWO:
  • The Pioneers took the early 4-0 lead before the Yellow Jackets answered and tied it at seven. LIU Post used a 6-0 run in the middle of the first set to take a 14-9 lead. They Yellow Jackets didn't put their heads down, and tied it at 15. The Pioneers ended up taking the set by a score of 26-24.
  • AIC trailed 8-7 when they took the next three points to take the 10-8 lead. The two teams battled to a 19 all score. LIU Post took six of the next seven points and the second set, 25-20.
  • LIU Post continued to roll as it rallied off the first eight points in the third set. The Yellow Jackets cut their deficit to just one, 18-17, but the Yellow Jackets ran out of gas and the Pioneers took the set and the match.
GAME NOTES:
  • Rivera is now just 114 digs away from becoming the career leader in digs in program history.
  • Boele has recorded double-digit kills in 10 of the last 13 matches, including eight double-doubles.
  • LIU Post held Rivera to just eight digs in the match, the first time she has recorded less than 11 digs in a match.
