SPRINGFIELD,Massachusetts The American International College baseball team was defeated by the Chargers of the University of New Haven by a score of 10-2.
With the loss, the Yellow Jackets slip to 15-27 overall and 8-17 in the Northeast-10 while the Chargers advance to 24-9 overall and 15-7 in the NE10.
New Haven was the first to score, as a two-run home run gave the Chargers a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. It didn't take long for New Haven to strike again, as three more runs came across in the second inning. A single with the bases loaded scored the first run along with a throwing error that gave way to a two-run play. A sac fly to deep center field pushed the third run of the inning across to give the Chargers a 5-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets scored their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning, with a single up the middle by Chris Starcun with one out to start the rally. A six-pitch walk from Matt Costanza put two runners on base before Andrew Ciacciareli was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Eugene Quirk walked to bring in the first run for the Yellow Jackets, as a sac fly from Brendan Carter to center field drove in Costanza, making it 5-2.
The Chargers were able to score their final four runs of the game in the ninth inning with a pair of two-run home runs, giving New Haven a commanding 10-2 victory.
AIC gave Cam Winiarz (L, 1-4) the start, as he faced two batters, giving up two hits and two runs before being replaced by Jason Coscio. Coscio went 8.2 innings, where he gave up eight runs on 11 hits and four walks, with five strikeouts. JD LeHouiller came in to deal with the last batter.
The Yellow Jackets conclude their season with a Senior Day doubleheader against the Charger on Sunday, May 7 at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
