SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts The American International College softball team hosted Pace University for its Senior Day on Sunday, April 23, posting a walkoff win in the seventh inning to come away with a 3-2 victory.
AIC honored four seniors pitcher Alyssa Camargo, outfielder Kristen Steele, pitcher Jillian Bedard, and outfielder Keymell Cartwright before the game's first pitch.
Camargo started in the circle for the Yellow Jackets and Jaclyn Flores started for Pace.
Pace got to Camargo right from the start as Ashley Lew led off with a walk and then Haley Hernandez sacrifice bunted to get her over to second. After Camargo struck out the next batter, Lew stole third and then an infield single from Jordan Chilinsky scored Lew, putting Pace up 1-0.
That was all Pace got in that inning and AIC responded immediately in the bottom half of the first. Steele led off with an infield single and then stole second. A single through the right side from Sarah Baganz was enough for Steele to score from second and tie the game for AIC.
Pace responded immediately as well, due to some errors from AIC in the top of the second inning. Nikole Larm reached on an error from Kayla Riley and then a sacrifice bunt from Annie Carberry got Larm to second. Lindsey Ah Soon singled to up the middle afterward, and with runners on first and third, a single from Stephanie Wang scored Larm to put Pace up 2-1.
AIC leveled the scored in the third inning as a single up the middle from Baganz got things started. Baganz then stole second and reached third on a wild pitch. Jamie Mainez stepped to the plate with two outs and got a huge two-out single to right field that scored Baganz, making the score 2-2 at the end of three.
The game remained tied at two until the bottom of the seventh. Steele led off the inning with a double, and then a sacrifice bunt attempt from Baganz was miscalculated by the Pace infield. Yami Lopez-Perez stepped up to the plate with two runners in scoring position and nobody out, on the third pitch of the at-bat she singled up the middle to score Steele, giving AIC an incredible walkoff win to cap off its senior day.
Bedard picked up the win for AIC, coming in in the seventh. Emma Bernet picked up the loss for Pace.
AIC is now 16-19 (13-9 in conference) and will face Nyack College in a doubleheader for its next matchup on Tuesday, April 25.
