LAST TIME OUT: The Yellow Jackets led by as much as three early in the second half, but a rally by the Ravens pushed Franklin Pierce past AIC, 10-8, on April 12. After
Lauren Witherspoon opened the half with her second goal of the game, the Ravens netted five in a row, bookended by goals by Megan Schaffer, to take a two goal edge, and while
Stefanie Dufresne scored two of her four goals in the game late, it was not enough as the visiting side held on for the win.
Merrimack struggled against the third-ranked Le Moyne Dolphins on April 14, falling 14-6. Vicki Graveline had four of her five goals in the first half as the Dolphins raced out to a 9-2 lead at the break. The Warriors rallied, scoring four of the first five goals of the second frame, with three helpers by Amber Feminella, but the Dolphins netted the last four of the game for the 14-6 final.
LAST TIME THEY MET: A five-goal outburst in the first and another trio of tallies in the second allowed AIC to hold on as they topped the Warriors, 10-8, at Abdow Field on April 19, 2016.
Jessica Lawler tallied a hat trick in the win, while
Riley Brennan had two goals and Dufresne had a goal and a pair of assists to lead AIC's offense.
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS: The Merrimack offense is balanced and has four players right near the top in goals. Bridget Schofield leads the way with 20, while Amber Feminella and Anette Ruggiero have 19, and Hunter McCarthy and Olivia Colletti each have 18. Feminella's 11 assists top the team and give her the squad's points lead at 30. In net, Lauren Trepaney has been the team's primary starter, with 10 appearances and eight starts, and holds a .424 SV%; Alexa Petzold has hit the field for eight games, including five starts, and is at a .363 SV%.
SHOOT IT: If the Yellow Jackets want to take advantage of Merrimack's goaltending, they will need to find a way to get the ball at the target more. AIC currently averages just 17.9 shots per game, the lowest in the league, which explains the team's offensive struggles. They are 12th in goals despite having the league's seventh-best shooting percentage at 43.7%, so a concerted effort to get shots should lead to goals.
NEXT UP: The Yellow Jackets head to the Nutmeg State to make up a matchup against the Post Eagles on April 20. Opening draw is slated for 3:30 p.m.
