PLEASANTSVILLE, New York The American International College baseball team was defeated by the Pace University Setters in 15 innings by a score of 8-7.
With the loss AIC moves to 9-19 overall and 4-9 in the NE10. With the win Pace advances to 20-10 overall and 7-5 in the NE10.
Both the Yellow Jackets and Setters were able to score in the first inning, with
Josh Aviles walking to start the inning, he would make his way to third base on a stolen base and advancing on the throwing error by the catcher.
Chris Starcun walked to put runners on first and third before a Matt Kruase sacrifice fly to left field brought Aviles home to make it 1-0
Pace countered in the bottom of the inning, tying the game up with a RBI single to right center that drove a runner in from third. The Setters took the lead shortly after, with a RBI single that found its way to left field scoring another runner from third to make it 2-1.
AIC and Pace held each other to a standstill until the sixth inning, when the offense for the Yellow Jackets came back to life, scoring two runs to give AIC the lead once again. K.J White led things off with as he was hit by a pitch, which was followed off by Starcun singling down the right side to put runners on first and second. Krause grounded out to third, which allowed Starcun and White to advance a base, giving the Yellow Jackets runners in scoring position. Matt Wroth followed up with a single out to right field, scoring White and pushing Starcun to third. Next up was
Eugene Quirk, who hit a ground ball to the shortstop, who got Wroth out at second, but scored Starcun, making it 3-2 Yellow Jackets.
It didn't take long for AIC to get back on the scoreboard, with an RBI single by Starcun in the seventh inning that score Aviles from second base making it 4-2. Pace responded as well in the seventh with two runs of their own. A home run to left field brought the Setters within one, and a double to left field would tie the game at four.
The stalemate saw extra innings for AIC and Pace, with the next set of runs coming in the tenth, where Kruase sent a pitch screaming over the left field line, leading the team with now four on the year. Wanting to extend the game an extra from, a two out double down the right field line scored a runner from second base to tie the game up at five.
Neither team was able to gain any ground on each other until the top of the 15
th when the Yellow Jackets scored two runs on a sacrifice bunt put down by
Matt Costanza, that brought home Quirk from third and saw Andrew Ciacciareli score from second due to an error committed by the Pace pitcher to make it 7-5 AIC.
With their backs to the wall, the Setters threw everything and the kitchen sink at the Yellow Jackets, tying the game with a double to left field that scored runners from second and third. With two outs, a RBI single was sent out to left field to Pace an 8-7 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
AIC gave
Jason Coscio the start against Pace, as he went 6.2 innings getting a no decision. During his time on the hill, Coscio allowed nine hits, four runs and one strikeout.
Joe Pepe was the first pitcher to come in relief. Pepe went 1.1 innings, giving up two hits, one walk and one strikeout.
Anthony Crudale was next up, pitching a spotless frame of baseball. Dan Streich (Loss, 0-2) came in to pitch the next the next five innings, and picked up his second loss of the year. Streich gave up six hits, four runs, only three where earned, three walks and two strikeouts. Ryan Brunning then came in to pitch a third of an inning, giving up one hit.
AIC and Pace go back at it again on Saturday, April 15 for a doubleheader at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
