ALBANY, New York The American International College softball team took on the College of Saint Rose in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 12. AIC entered the doubleheader with an eight-game winning streak, but it came to an end as it lost the first game 6-2, but then bounced back to win the second game 10-2.
Alyssa Camargo started the first game for the Yellow Jackets but couldn't find a rhythm early. The Golden Knights got to her in the first inning, as a single from Carly Wood scored Dana Nicoletti, and then a double from Taylor Solomon scored Astasia Myler and Wood.
That ended the scoring for the first inning, with Saint Rose holding a 3-0 lead, but the Golden Knights picked up where they left off in the second inning as another single from Wood got a run, scoring Sydney Cimini. Then Briana Bowen reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Alina Germinerio to score and push the lead to 5-0.
That ended the scoring for the second and also ended the day for Camargo, as Sarah Beliveau came in to replace her.
The Golden Knights picked up one run on Beliveau as a first and third play that involved a steal from Jadyn Costello allowed Taylor Solomon to score.
AIC picked up two runs in the sixth as a single from Kaley Kempf scored Yami Lopez-Perez, and then Sarah Baganz singled to score Ashley Hughes.
That ended the scoring for game one as AIC lost 6-2. Camargo got the loss for the Yellow Jackets and Dana Nicoletti got the win for Saint Rose.
Jillian Bedard started for AIC in the second game, while Roma Mazzariello started for Saint Rose.
Saint Rose got on the board first by scoring in two runs in the third inning. A double from Wood scored Nicoletti, and then a single from Costello scored Wood.
But that was it for Saint Rose's offense in game number two, as the AIC bats got hot right after Saint Rose drew first blood.
The Yellow Jackets attacked in the fourth inning as they put up eight runs, the most they've scored in a single inning this season. A groundout from Alexa DiLeo scored Sarah Baganz for the first run of the inning and the onslaught had started. A single from Kaley Kempf scored Kristen Steele for the next run and then a single from Bedard followed, scoring Lopez-Perez.
The single trend continued as Jess Lingenberg hit one, scoring Kempf. Then Hughes came up and hit a two-RBI single, scoring Lingenberg and Bedard. Then the last single of the inning came as Steele singled, scoring Hughes and Kayla Riley.
After the monstrous fourth inning AIC didn't do any more damage in the fifth, but added insult to injury in the sixth. Baganz stealing second forced an error from Saint Rose catcher Victoria Hallett, which allowed Hughes to score. Then a single from Beliveau scored Baganz.
That ended the scoring for the day, as AIC won 10-2. Bedard picked up the win and Mazzariello picked up the loss.
AIC is now 13-12 (8-4) and will travel to West Haven, Connecticut on Saturday, April 15, in a doubleheader for their matchup.
