SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - Despite a record-breaking 25 saves from freshman goalkeeper Matt Sayegh, the American International College men's lacrosse team suffered an 18-3 setback to Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference action.
AIC falls to 0-11 on the year and 0-6 in the NE10.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead before AIC could get on the board, as senior attacker John Magliano took sole possession of the team lead with his 10th goal of the year at 12:26.
AIC's other goals were scored by junior Jack McIntyre, who tied Magliano with his 10th of the season at 5:24 of the second period, and senior attacker Kevin Papineau, who netted his sixth of the season at 10:55 of the fourth period.
The real story for AIC was Sayegh, who faced a barrage and turned aside the majority of the chances he faced, most notably a diving save with about two and a half minutes to go in the third period.
In all, Sayegh made 25 saves, and the last one, made on Assumption's Spencer Marocchini with 0:49 left in regulation, broke the record for saves in a single game that had previously been set by Alexis Buque, who made 24 saves against Saint Michaels on April 20, 2013.
The Yellow Jackets return to action in a week's time with a 4:30 p.m. start at The College of Saint Rose on Wednesday, April 5.
