WINTER PARK, Florida The American International College softball team fell to Rollins College in a doubleheader 15-3 in the first game, and 3-0 in the second game on Friday, March 10.
With the losses, the Yellow Jackets begin their season 0-2 overall while Rollins moves to 18-9 overall.
Rollins struck first, scoring two runs in the first inning after a bunt single drove in a runner from second and advanced one to third. Later in the inning, another bunt single advanced a Rollins runner safely home to give the Tars a 2-0 lead. Rollins was all over the Yellow Jackets in the second inning as well, as the Tars tacked on seven more runs to increase their lead to 9-0.
The Yellow Jackets produced their first hits of the contest in the third inning as Ashley Hughes singled down into left field, and Keymell Cartwright drove a pitch past first base to give the Yellow Jackets runners on first and second, but two quick outs stalled AIC's offense.
The Tars produced their next runs in the bottom of the fourth, with four more runs coming to score.
The Yellow Jackets saw an offensive surge in the top of the fifth inning, starting with a Kristen Steele single up the middle. Hughes then slapped a pitch down into left field to give the Yellow Jackets runners on first and second. With the bases loaded, Sarah Baganz singled to left field to score Steele for the first run of the game for AIC. Two more runs would come across for the Yellow Jackets as Yami Lopez reached on a fielder's choice and proceeded to advance to second base on a throwing error that would score Hughes cleanly from third and Cartwright after she had advanced to third base. The Jackets weren't done as Jamie Mainez would put down a sac bunt to score Baganz from third base and advance Lopez to second base. The last run of the inning for AIC to score would be Lopez coming in to score after Lydia DePina reached on an error.
AIC and Rollins would only play to six innings, as the Tars would win 13-5. Jillian Bedard received the loss after pitching 1.1 innings. She allowed seven earned runs, nine hits, one walk and one strike out. Sarah Beliveau would come in in relief, pitching 2.2 innings and giving up four hits, six runs with three earned, five walks and one strikeout.
The Jackets would play the Tars much better in the second game, but Rollins would once again be the first to strike as a double to center field drove in a runner from second base to make it 1-0 Rollins. AIC got runners on in the second and third due to throwing errors, but were unable to produce much more that, seeing a runner stranded on second after Hughes stole second before being stranded with three straight outs in the third inning.
Neither team mustered much offense until the bottom of the fifth, where the Tars would scrap together two runs. A deep single down the left field line would score a runner from second base and give Rollins runners on first and second while a bunt single later in the inning would move one runner across to make it 3-0 Rollins.
The Yellow Jackets had their best chance to score in the second game in the top of the sixth inning when Baganz and Lopez were on first and second. Mainez would single to center field, where Lopez would advance to second base, but be thrown out at third. Baganz would proceed to third, but she would be tagged out at home plate, preserving the Tars lead.
Both the Yellow Jackets and Tars would go silently through the rest of the game. Alyssa Camargo picked up the loss as she pitched six innings, only allowing five hits, three runs, two earned, three walks and two strikeouts.
The Yellow Jackets move to Clearmont, Florida to play Georgian Court University and Philadelphia University on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3:30p.m.
