Ice hockey plays to draw with No. 20 Air Force

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colorado - The American International College ice hockey team just held off a full comeback from the No. 20 Air Force Academy, and played to a 3-3 draw on Saturday, February 11, at the Cadet Ice Arena.

AIC moves to 7-18-7 on the year with a 6-14-6 mark in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Falcons are now 19-8-5 overall and 16-5-3 in-conference.

Freshman Zackarias Skog, who made his second consecutive start in net, finished with 26 saves.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 3-0 lead, with freshmen Hugo Reinhardt and Dominik Florian each posting a two-point night. Classmate Joel Kocur also added a goal. But Air Force added three goals over the course of 86 seconds to come back and tie things up.

After one period, things were neck-and-neck, with the game scoreless and each team posting nine shots apiece. But AIC took its first lead of the weekend - and since a Jan. 21 victory against Niagara - when Reinhardt cleaned up an initial shot from Florian that had trickled between Starrett's legs at 6:46 of the second period.

Kocur extended AIC's lead to 2-0 at the 6:37 mark of the third period, when he brought the puck up the ice himself for his third goal of the year. Senior captain Austin Orszulak then added a goal at the 15:36 mark to push the lead to 3-0.

Air Force would storm back, however, outshooting the Yellow Jackets 10-5 over the course of the third period and eventuallytying things up with 2:37 remaining.

Skog held steady in net, though, and made four saves in overtime to preserve the tie.

AIC will enjoy a weekend off before concluding the regular season with a home-and-home series against Army West Point. The first game of the series will be on Thursday, February 23 at the MassMutual Center, with puck drop slated for 7:05 p.m.
