Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Watts drains Chargers in women's basketball win

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts The American International College women's basketball team secured another home court victory, defeating the University of New Haven Chargers, 60-41. Dana Watts led the way with 21points and 13 rebounds. Alyssa Guyon had a solid game as well, recording 13 points.

The Yellow Jackets were the first to strike with an open jump shot, as they were able to take a 10-point lead into the second, leading the Chargers 16-6. AIC was able to ride a nine-point streak to end the quarter, with Imani Stepney hitting a contested jump shot before Guyon would put up seven straight points to end the first quarter.

AIC would start the second quarter the same way they finished the first, with Guyon hitting an open jump shot to put the Jackets up 12. Katia Oge and Guyon traded sets of free throws before Sade King and Micah Wormack both hit layups, cutting the Jackets' lead to nine. The single-digit lead wouldn't last long, as AIC scored eight of the last 11 points to end the quarter, with Guyon and Watts both scoring to push AIC's lead to 13 points before an open three-point shot by Khayla Trowell gave the Chargers their last points of the half. Rashana Siders finished the half nicely with four points within 20 seconds to put the Jackets up 31-14 going into the half.

In the second half, AIC would see the same type of success as before, with Nadia Wooten scoring her first two points of the game with a contested jump shot. The Chargers and Jackets became tangled in a stalemate, swapping empty baskets before the Jackets were able to get Watts and Tanisha Moyer to score back-to-back, putting the Jackets up by 18 points. With the quarter slowly coming to an end, the Chargers saw their next seven points all come from free throws, but the Jackets countered with five points from Watts. The Chargers scored the last four points of the third quarter, leaving the score 46-32 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.

New Haven scored first to open the fourth, with Alexandria Kerr hitting a heavily contested three-point shot from the top of the arc. The Yellow Jackets then went on to score eight of the game's next 11 points, with six of them coming from the line courtesy of Watts and Dominique Boyd, and the other two from an easy layup converted by Guyon, putting the Jackets up by 19. New Haven would get the next four points with Allieyah Cubbage and Katia Oge both making their baskets, before the Jackets would push back with six points, seeing Jayda Gilmore, Imani Stepney and Oshinofa Lakoju all scoring to help the Jackets secure a 60-41 victory.

AIC returns to action on Saturday, Feburary 4, when it travels to Syracuse, New York, for a 1 p.m. matchup against Le Moyne College.
