SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts- The American International College women's basketball team hosted the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire on a snowy Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets rallied in the second half to improve their record to 12-5 overall and 6-2 in the Northeast-10 thanks to the 73-67 victory.
Dana Watts led both teams with 28 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks. She now has recorded her nation-leading 12th double-double.
Imani Stepney also netted a double-double with 17 and 10.
Rashana Siders had 13 points, just one behind her career high, which came against Post University earlier this season.
The Yellow Jackets jumped ahead early on jumpers by Watts and
Jayda Gilmore. The Penmen answered with a deep three by Sara Ryan. The Yellow Jackets grew their lead to five in the first quarter at the 6:56 mark on a layup by
Alyssa Guyon. Down four with 41 seconds left in the first, Molly Terry of SNHU made one from long distance to make it a one point game after 10 minutes.
The Penmen took their first lead of the game on a layup 23 seconds into the second quarter. It did not last long, as the Yellow Jackets scored the next four points to give them the 22-18 edge with 7:04 on the clock. With just a little under four minutes to play in the first half, the Penmen knocked down a free throw to give them a three point lead. A jumper by Siders made it a tight one point game a minute later. Watts gave AIC the lead on a layup at the 2:15 mark. As the clock wound down, the Yellow Jackets kept the lead and went into the locker room up one, 32-31.
The Yellow Jackets drew first blood in the second with a
Tanisha Moyer layup off an offensive rebound. The Penmen went on a 9-1 run over almost two minutes and took the 40-36 lead. With three minutes on the clock, Siders knocked down a three and got the Yellow Jackets rolling as they went on a 8-0 run and took the 51-49 lead. After three quarters, AIC was up 54-51.
It took almost two minutes, but the Penmen tied the game at 56. Siders knocked down a shot from downtown 20 seconds later and gave the Yellow Jackets the lead. They never relinquished it from there as they went on to win 73-67.
The Yellow Jackets will next travel to Franklin Piece on Wednesday, January 11 for a 5:30 tip.
