SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts- The American International College men's basketball team put their four-game winning streak on the line against Assumption College on Wednesday, January 4. In the 40 minutes of play, the two teams had eight tied scores and 14 lead changes. The Greyhounds took the lead with 5:59 left in the game and never gave it up as they went on to win, 77-72.
Juwan Moody led AIC with 16 points on 4-for-7 from the field and 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Rasheed Howard was right behind him with 15 points and added six rebounds. Rounding out the double-digit scoring was Javyon Pitts-Young with 11; he also added four boards and three assists.
On the first Yellow Jacket possession, Moody went up for a three, made the basket, and drew the foul. He finished the four-point play to give AIC the 4-0 lead. At the 12:34 mark, the Greyhounds' Damien Rance hit a layup and gave his team the 13-12 advantage. It took almost four minutes, but
Tahlib Swan knocked down the easy layup and the Yellow Jackets had the one-point edge. Moody went up for another three with 18 seconds left when he drew the foul for three down. He knocked down all three as AIC thought it was going into the locker room with a lead. Austin Kearney had a different thought, as he hit a layup and gave the Greyhounds the 28-27 edge.
It didn't take long for the Yellow Jackets to regain the lead. On the first possession of the second half, Howard hit a close-range shot and headed to the line for an and-one. He knocked the free throw down and AIC took the lead 30-28. The Yellow Jackets' lead grew to five with 7:31 lead, 58-53, but the Greyhounds made a quick run. They went on a 12-0 run to go up 65-58. AIC cut the their deficit down to three with seven seconds left, but it was too late as the Greyhounds snapped the Yellow Jackets' four-game win streak.
The Yellow Jackets will host Southern New Hampshire on Saturday, January 7 at 3:30 p.m.
