SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts- The American International College men's basketball team opened up a two-game home swing as they hosted the Purple Knights of St. Michael's. The Yellow Jackets had a 17-point lead at the half, but a late shot by
Juwan Moody gave AIC the two-point win, 83-81.
All five starters scored in double digits against the Purple Knights. Javyon Pitts-Young was at the front of the pack with 22 points.
Tahlib Swan added 15 points, seven boards, and three assists. Moody,
Bruce Spruell, and
Rasheed Howard each had 14 points. Spruell had seven assists and three boards while Howard added four boards and three dimes.
The Yellow Jackets had a one-point lead, 12-11, after a Purple Knight layup with 10:15 left to play in the first half. AIC rallied off 16 straight points in under four minutes as it looked like the game was going to be a blow-out. After 20 minutes of play, AIC was up 17, 46-29.
The largest Yellow Jacket lead of the night came 13 seconds into the second half when Howard finished the old-fashioned three-point play and extended the AIC advantage to 20 points. In just over nine minutes, the Purple Knights outscored the Yellow Jackets 24-7 and just like that it was a one-possession game with 10 minutes left in the game. St. Michael's finally got over the hump and tied the game at 68 as 34 minutes had passed since the tip.
As the clock counted down, the Yellow Jackets kept the lead, but could not put the Purple Knights away. With just 33 ticks left on the clock, Purple Knight David Sullivan hit his 18
th and 19
th points on the night on a layup to tie the game at 81.
AIC got the ball past the timeline and called a timeout with a 10-second differential between the game and shot clock. With 10 seconds remaining on the shot clock, Pitts-Young started the play. Moody found the ball in his hands with seconds left on the clock. Moody pulled up a foot inside the three-point line and knocked down the two-pointer with 10 seconds left. The Purple Knights took a shot at the three, but it was off the mark and AIC took home the 83-81 win.
AIC returns to action on Wednesday, February 1 as it battles the Chargers of New Haven at 7:30 p.m.
