Women's tennis falls in home opener to top-ranked Adelphi

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The American International College women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought match against preseason conference No. 1-rankedAdelphi University, 9-0, on Wednesday at Springfield Central High School in the teams' season opener.

In second doubles action, Carleyah McLean and Logan Smith rallied but fell, 8-2, to Adelphi's Rebecca Fakas and Samantha Perri. McLean had another strong showing in the second-longest match of the day at first singles, falling 6-1, 6-0 to reigning Northeast-10 MVP Elizabeth Kallenberg.

AIC's Eleanna Fulop fought in the longest match of the day at third singles against Karen Serina, which ended in a final score of 6-2, 6-1.

Fulop and Isabela Daudt teamed up at first singles, falling to Kallenberg and Sarina 8-0. Yellow Jacket newcomers Alice Calabrese and Yliannis Knaggs took an 8-0 loss to Vanja Savic and Maria Bruzon at third singles.

Daudt fell to Fakas at second singles, 6-0, 6-1; Calabrese saw a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Savic. Knaggs posted a tough 6-2, 6-1 result against Bruzon in the sixth singles spot.

AIC will play again on Saturday with a matchup against the College of Saint Rose, slated for 1 p.m. in Albany, N.Y.
