The American International College men's soccer team stormed past the University of the District of Columbia in a 5-0 victory in Boyds, Maryland on Sunday afternoon, boosting its record to 2-0 to open the season.
Freshmen played a big role in the offense, with forward Nikola Popovich scoring two of the team's goals, bringing his season total to three, while midfielder Jake Durham and defender Jeovanny Alvarado added goals of their own. Popovich totaled six shots, three of which went on goal, and Durham had four shots with two on goal.
AIC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half, beginning with two goals on the team's first two shots. Sophomore midfielder Alejandro Alvarez was the first to get on the board, when he scored on a penalty kick just 4:05 into the contest. Durham's free kick from the far left side pushed the score to 2-0 at 10:05.
Popovich had the first of his two goals just 8:07 later, connecting on a cross from fellow freshman forward Steven Hernandez.
In the second half, Popovich added his second goal at 72:12 on a breakaway. Soon thereafter, Alvarado scored off a rebound to push the score to 5-0.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nicholas Romei played 90 shutout minutes, saving both of the two UDC shots he faced.
AIC will look to win three in a row with a matchup against Mercy College on Wednesday in Dobbs Ferry, New York.
