SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - Despite a last-minute push, the American International College football team couldn't sneak past Shippensburg University and fell by a score of 16-9 on Saturday afternoon at Abdow Field.
AIC redshirt sophomore quarterback Kwame Jarvis threw for 205 yards and rushed for 25 on the day, while senior running back Marcel DePina had 18 rushing yards. Graduate student wide receiver Evan Graham had five receptions for 74 yards, and redshirt freshman wide receiver Ju'an Williams recorded four receptions and 67 yards. Graduate student safety Daquan Homes had 13 tackles and freshman linebacker Cyriacus Ibezim had 12 tackles in the strong defensive effort from the Yellow Jackets.
With the score knotted at 9-9, Shippensburg scored a touchdown and converted on the point-after to go up 16-9 with 2:37 left in the game. AIC began their drive on their own 38-yard line, and Jarvis connected on a fourth-and-eight with a 14-yard throw to Graham to land at the Shippensburg 46. The Yellow Jackets got as close as the 23-yard line, but just missed on a fourth-and-three attempt at the end of the game.
AIC took an early 2-0 lead with 5:57 left in the first quarter, when junior safety Lorenzo Melchiorre forced the Red Raiders into the Yellow Jackets' end zone for a safety and two points.
AfterShippensburg converted on a field goal to take a 3-2 lead going into the second period, AIC regained the lead on a rush from redshirt sophomore running back Rico Facey from the one-yard line to go ahead 9-3.
Red Raiders kicker Billy Deane later made his second and third field goals of the day to tie the game at 9-9 with 11:01 remaining. The following touchdown - scored by Justin Pyle on a run from the one-yard line - proved to be the difference-maker in the contest.
