Flushing, New York- On the last day of the Long Island Tournament the Yellow Jackets marked their best four game start of since the 2012 season. The 'Jackets had a pair of early matches as they took on the Knights of Queens College at 10 a.m. and the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College at noon.
Queens College
The early start time showed in the first set as the 'Jackets dropped the first set 25-18. The caffeine set in with the Knights leading 17-14 in the second set when
Caitlin Sobolewski tallied a block that started a five-point string to take the lead. In the second set the 'Jackets more than tripled their first set kills, five, to 16 and took the hard fought second set 28-26.
As the 'Jackets continued they only improved, but so did the Knights. After falling behind by three early in the third set the Knights stormed to take the 15-12 lead. Both teams continued to pressure the other as the set grew into a tight 22 all dual. On the set point the 'Jackets forced an error and two the 2-1 set lead.
With their foot on the pedal, the 'Jackets continued to play at a high level. In the fourth set they swung a season best .375 with 16 kills and four errors on 32 attempts as they took the match in the fourth set by a score of 25-23.
Leading team was Diva Rivas with 15 kills, and three blocks while Dolores had 38 assist and 10 digs.
Chestnut Hill College
Just 40 minutes after knocking off the Knights the 'Jackets took on Griffins of Chestnut Hill College. In the first set the Griffins played a near perfect game recording only one error while forcing nine 'Jacket errors as they took the set 25-20.
The 'Jackets bounced back in the set second by eliminating errors and six unanswered points early in the set to put them up 9-4. The Griffins coach would then call a timeout to stop the run. The 'Jackets went on three point run in later set to put their lead at five and they did not lose the lead as they took tied the match up at one set a piece, 25-20.
In the last two sets the 'Jackets dominated the Griffins. The 'Jackets forced five errors and only allowed seven kills in the third set while committing three errors with 13 kills. More impressively they took the set by 12 points, 25-13. Then in the fourth the 'Jackets forced six errors while allowing 18 point and taking the set 25-18 and the match 3-1..
The 3-1 start is the best four game start for the program when they started 4-0.
Diva Rivas-Reyes leads the 'Jacts in kills with 50 and is averaging 4.08 points per set.
Dolores Kopren has recorded 164 assist and seven service aces in 15 sets played.
The 'Jackets will return to action on Tuesday September 6 at Nyack College with a start time of 7 p.m.
