SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--American International College Field Hockey concludes their four-game homestand with preseason number seven Adelphi in a matinee contest at Abdow Field.
LAST TIME OUT:Frustration was the name of the game for the Yellow Jackets in a 1-0 setback to Saint Michael's that saw AICdominate early, only to have the Purple Knights take over late in both halves. AIC fired the first eight shot attempts of the game, putting three on net, but Saint Michael's ended the first half with a 5-3 edge in shots on target and a total shot tally of 8-6 AIC. In the second half, despite an early barrage of chances, it was the Purple Knights who scored the decisive tally in the 58th minute. Saint Michael's held on after that to secure the win.
Adelphi jumped on Pace early and held on for a 2-0 win in their last outing. The Panthers scored both goals in a span of 1:51 as Jamie Ahrens opened the scoring on a penalty corner at 9:01 and Charlotte Smith doubled the lead at 10:52. In the first half alone, the Panthers had a 10-1 shot advantage and a 5-0 edge in corners. Pace actually outshot Adelphi 3-2 in the second frame but could not beat goalkeeper Amanda Gargiulo, who made three saves in total for her first shutout of the season.
LAST TIME THEY MET:Scoring chances were plenty, but only one of the combined 33 shot attempts found the cage as Adelphi topped AIC 1-0 in Springfield on October 3, 2015. Kristen Bagley had the winning tally for the Panthers, who had a 9-6 shots on goal edge and a 12-9 advantage in penalty corners. Gargiulo had six saves in the shutout win, while sophomore
Taylor Ross turned aside eight of nine shots in the defeat.
THE (CARLE) PLACE TO BE: The small town of Carle Place, N.Y. is home to barely over 5,000 people, and two of them will take the field in this game, as Adelphi freshman Elissa Frein and AIC senior
Taylor Ruscillo hail from the same Long Island village. They were teammates on the 2012 Carle Place Frogs field hockey squad.
NEXT UP:AIC hits the road for the first time this season as they travel to Mercy College on Wednesday, October 14 for a 4:00 p.m. start.
