Owls Swoop Past Women's Lacrosse in Overtime, 7-6

NEW HAVEN, Conn. The American International College women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking, 7-6, overtime decision to Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 action this evening from Jess Dow Field.

The loss drops AIC to 8-8 overall and 5-7 in the conference while the Owls move to 4-12 on the year and 2-10 in the NE-10.

The Jackets started fast scoring three quick goals as senior Kelly Reilly (Corning, N.Y.) scored just 49 seconds in and junior Jessica Lawler (Mexico, N.Y.) potted back-to-back scores for the 3-0 edge at the 22:11 mark of the opening half.

SCSU promptly called a timeout and came out quick following the break with a goal from Nicole Healey just 13 ticks later. Carolynn Keal then found the back of the net with help from Healey at the 11:41 mark before Samantha Cozzolino tied the contest at 3-3 with less than four minutes remaining in the half.

AIC came out of the intermission poised for a better performance in the second half as senior Sydney DeArmond (Westborough, Mass.) gave the Jackets a 4-3 lead just 12 seconds into the frame. However, the Owls came right back scoring three straight as Healey, Keal and Taylor Portelinha made the score 6-4 at the 23:53 mark.

The Jackets fought back again as senior Cheyenne Carden (Branford, Conn.) registered her 31st goal of the season at the 9:53 mark before Lawler secured the hat-trick with the equalizerona free-position tally at 6:32 for the 6-6 tie.

AIC then gained possession with three minutes left on the clock and called timeout. They proceeded to hold the ball for the last shot, but the Owls came up with a huge turnover with under 10 seconds to play sending the game into overtime.

The Jackets won possession to open the overtime frame, but another costly turnover gave the ball back to Southern Connecticut and it was Healey who was able to tip the hat-trick for the Golden Goal at the 1:53 mark for the 7-6 final.

Junior goalkeeper Alexis Torosian (Hopkinton, Mass.) made 10 saves, but falls to 8-8 on the year as the Jackets were outshot 25-18 for the game including 17-11 on target while committing 23 turnovers to just 13 for SCSU.

American International wraps up the regular season as they host Saint Michael's College on Saturday during Senior Day at 4 p.m.
