GARDEN CITY, N.Y. The American International College women's lacrosse team dropped a, 20-2, decision today to No. 1 nationally ranked Adelphi University in Northeast-10 action this afternoon from Motamed Field.
AIC falls to 7-6 overall and 4-5 in conference action with the setback while the Panthers improve to 12-0 on the year and 9-0 in the NE-10.
Adelphi came out of the gates quick and raced to an early 7-0 lead with just 11:53 off the clock led by a hat-trick from Jacqueline Jahelka. The Jackets stiffened their defense holding AU scoreless for over ten minutes and off a free-position attempt it was junior Riley Brennan (Wilbraham, Mass.) finding freshman Mary Bates (East Longmeadow, Mass.) on the lower left of the cage and the rookie shot low for the 7-1 score at the 9:12 mark of the opening half.
However, the Panthers came right back with three scores in just 1:30 for the 10-1 lead at the 3:17 mark, but it was AIC benefitting from a pair of yellow cards by the hosts to score on another free-position attempt with less than a minute to play in the half. In almost an identical play as their first goal, but reversed it was senior Cheyenne Carden (Branford, Conn.) finding Bates on the opposite side of the cage this time for another low shot score and 10-2 deficit at the half.
The second half was all Adelphi as they blanked the Jackets scoring ten more goals in the period for the 20-2 victory.
Junior goalkeeper Alexis Torosian (Hopkinton, Mass.) falls to 7-6 with the loss after making 10 saves. AIC was outshot 39-5 while the Panthers also controlled ground balls (16-5) and draws (17-7).
The Jackets return home for their next contest as they battle Merrimack at 7 p.m.
