PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. Junior Riley Brennan (Wilbraham, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime to help lift American International College to an, 11-10, victory at Pace University in Northeast-10 women's lacrosse action this evening from Pace Stadium.
AIC moves to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the NE-10 with the victory while the Setters fall to 5-2 on the year and an even 2-2 mark in conference action.
Pace came from behind to force the extra session scoring four times in just a 4:35 span midway through the second half to tie the game at 10-10 with 10:30 remaining on the clock. The two defenses stiffened after that as the Jackets were held without a shot for the final 11:32 and the Setters clanked a post with under five minutes to play forcing the overtime period.
AIC won the opening draw of the extra frame, but a free-position shot down the other end by junior Stefanie Dufresne (Belchertown, Mass.) was stonewalled by Setter net-minder Alissa Silvestri at the 4:05 mark.
Pace came right down the length of the field and Makayla McDermott fired on cage, but this time it was Jacket junior Alexis Torosian (Hopkinton, Mass.) coming up with the big save to set the stage for Brennan as she converted on the other end at the 3:06 mark to tip the hat-trick and secure the second overtime victory for AIC on the season.
Pace opened the scoring just over a minute into the contest, but the Jackets had a quick response as senior Cheyenne Carden (Branford, Conn.) scored at the 1:46 mark of action for the 1-1 tie.
Junior Riley Brennan (Wilbraham, Mass.) then sandwiched a goal between a pair of Pace scores before junior classmates Jessica Lawler (Mexico, N.Y.) and scored back-to-back goals just 2:17 apart for the 4-3 lead at the 15:47 mark.
The teams continued to trade goals as it was freshman Mary Bates (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Carden getting another for AIC while Brennan gave the Jackets their first multi-goal lead with her second of the game at the 4:05 mark for the 7-5 edge.
The Setters added a late first half goal to cut the deficit to one, 7-6, heading into the intermission.
Dufresne added her second goal of the game to open the second half scoring with a goal at 23:34 and senior Kelly Reilly (Corning, N.Y.) followed with back-to-back goals for the 10-6 advantage midway through the half.
Torosian collected six saves to improve to 6-2 on the year while Silvestri made eight stops and falls to 5-2. The Setters held the slim 31-30 mark in shots, but AIC led in shots on target, 19-16. Each team collected 19 ground balls and AIC controlled the draws 14-9, but were just 4-for-14 on free-position shots.
AIC returns to action on Saturday as they travel to Bentley for a 12 p.m. affair.
