Kempf Goes Yard Again, But Softball Drops NE-10 Tilt With New Haven, 11-3

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. American International College freshman Kaley Kempf (Oxford, Conn.) notched her third homerun of the season, but softball fell in Northeast-10 Southwest Division play to the University of New Haven Friday evening at Groff Field, 11-3.

With the loss AIC falls to 9-8 overall and 1-3 in divisional play, while with the win New Haven improves to 10-4 and evens out at 1-1 in NE-10 games.

AIC got on the board first in the bottom of the first. Senior Jorrdin Miller (Garfield, N.J.) knocked one into the outfield, allowing freshman Ashley Hughes (Rancho Palos Verde, Calif.) to scurry home from second.

New Haven responded with a flurry of runs in the next three innings, plating eight runners including a four-run fourth to take an 8-1 lead.

Kempf sent her third over the wall of the season in the fifth, bringing Jenna Costa (Turners Falls, Mass.) with her after the senior outfielder walked with one out. The homer was the seventh of the year for AIC who had just six dingers in all of 2015.

AIC junior pitcher Alyssa Camargo (Covina, Calif.) threw all seven innings, striking out three and walking three, but allowing 10 earned off 16 hits. New Haven's Victoria Cabral went 4.0 innings on the mound and picked up her eighth win of the year.

The two are back at it tomorrow, Saturday afternoon with a twinbill at the Groff slated to start at noon.
