Nine Run Sixth Lifts Baseball Over Post, 11-5

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Junior Chris Starcun (Easthampton, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in to help lift American International College to an, 11-5, victory over Post University in non-conference baseball action this afternoon from Bedard Field.

Down 5-0 headed into the bottom of the sixth, AIC (6-12) finally got on the board in a big way sending 13 hitters to the plate while scoring nine runs for the 9-5 lead.

Starcun tagged a two-run doubled to the gap in right center and later scored on a wild pitch to open the scoring before four straight free-passes led to another run for the Jackets as sophomore Alex LaFayette (Ludlow, Mass.) touched home. Sophomore Reed Phillips (Longmeadow, Mass.) also crossed home off a bases-loaded walk two batters later before a run scored after senior Karl Kapinos (South Hadley, Mass.) was struck by a pitch.

Starcun then stepped back up with the bases-loaded and cleared them with one swing of the bat on a slow tapper out in front of the plate which the pitcher threw past the bag at first up the right field line allowing all three runners to cross home.

American International added insurance in the eighth as Starcun plated a run with a single before LaFayette laced a double to the gap in left to score another for the 11-9 final.

The Eagles (5-13) loaded the bases in the top of the first, but were unable to push any runs across as sophomore Jason Coscio (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) got out of the jam unscathed.

However, Post used back-to-back doubles in the third to open the scoring as freshman Michael Munson (Plainville, Conn.) laced the run-producing two-bagger to left center for the 1-0 edge.

The Eagles then added to their lead in the fourth as freshman Shawn Boston (Brooklyn, N.Y.) lifted a solo-homer down the left field line and back-to-back RBI doubles accounted for the 4-0 margin.

Coscio didn't factor in the decision as junior Anthony Crudale (Cranston, R.I.) earned his first collegiate victory after tossing three scoreless innings allowing just a single hit to move to 1-0 on the year.

Eagle sophomore Kyle Crimmins (Eastchester, N.Y.) was dealt the loss after allowing two runs without recording an out to fall to 0-1 on the year.

The Jackets outhit the visitors 9-7 while each team committed three errors.

AIC returns to action this weekend with a three game set at New Haven to open Southwest divisional play. They will play a solo game Friday and a double-header on Saturday.
