PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - The American International College men's basketball team outlasted Pace University on the road in a crucial Northeast-10 Conference road action Saturday at the Goldstein Fitness Center, 72-64.
With the win, AIC improves to 11-13 overall and more importantly, 7-11 in NE-10 play. With the loss, Pace falls to 9-16 and 6-11 in conference clashes. The Yellow Jackets move into sole possession of fourth place in the NE-10 Southwest Division with two games remaining.
AIC pulled ahead by as many as 15 in the first half, made possible by a 13-4 run sparked by a freshman Jayvon Pitts-Young (Portland, Maine) three-ball. During that same span, senior guard Cameron Dobbs (Albany, N.Y.) got going, scoring seven points en route to a 4-6 half while going 2-4 from beyond the arc for 17 first half points.
Down nine to begin the second half, 43-34, the Setters chipped away at the Yellow Jacket lead slowly, but finally managed to tie it up with 4:33 to go at 60 apiece.
AIC proceeded to go 8-10 from the charity stripe down the stretch using four from sophomore Nolan Woodward (Montreal, Quebec) and three from junior Rasheed Howard (Woodbridge, N.J.).
Trying to foul and stop the clock, Pace missed the mark and Jacket junior Juwan Moody (Pontiac, Mich.) made them pay, knocking down a trey assisted by Pitts-Young with 21 seconds to go, making it a two-possession game, 70-64.
The Setters failed to convert and Woodward sunk his free throws on the other end to seal the victory.
Dobbs finished with a team-high 22 points, while going 4-9 from long range. Pitts-Young continued his recent scoring tear, adding 18 including three trey's. Howard finished with 10 and tied Woodward for a team-high eight rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday, Feb. 20 at home against the College of Saint Rose. Prior to the 3:30 p.m. tip-off with the Golden Knights will be a ceremony to celebrate the AIC seniors playing in their final home game.
