Yellow Jackets win Big Apple thriller

NEW YORK, New York- The American International College women's basketball took a trip to the Big Apple to take on the Setters of Pace University. The Yellow Jackets were held to nine points in the first quarter, but battled back and took the game by a score of 61-56.

After the first 10 minutes, the Yellow Jackets trailed 13-9, but they doubled the Setters' score in the second. The Yellow Jackets took the lead with 3:02 left in the half on a jumper by Imani Stepney to make it 22-21. Dana Watts scored the next six Yellow Jacket points, including a jumper to make it 28-23 with 45 seconds left. Nadia Wooten knocked down two shots from the charity stripe to give the Yellow Jackets the 30-23 lead at the midpoint.

The Setters cut the Yellow Jacket lead to three a minute and a half into the second half. Every time the Setters made a run, the Yellow Jackets answered. The Yellow Jacket's largest lead of the game came at 1:14 when Tanisha Moyer went 2-for-2 from the free throw line.

Down one point, the Setters went to the free throw line for a pair and knocked them down to give them the 51-50 lead. One their next possession, they hit a layup to take the three-point lead. There were 19 ticks on the clock when the Setters tied the game at 56. The Setters then called a timeout to set up their defense. The defense didn't work as Watts hit a layup to give the Yellow Jackets the two-point lead. A technical foul on the Setters gave the Yellow Jackets two free throws and the ball. Coach Kristen Hutchinson chose Watts to go to the line where she knocked both down. The Setters had no other options but to try and extend the game, but it was too late as the Yellow Jackets took the game 61-56.

Watts and Stepney each recorded a double-double. Watts had 22 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. Stepney recorded 15 points and 11 rebounds as she recorded her third straight double-double. As a team, the Yellow Jackets out-rebounded the Setters 42-36, and forced 18 Setter turnovers.

The Yellow Jacket return to action on Saturday when they travel to LIU Post for an afternoon showdown that is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
