GARDEN CITY, New York-The American International College women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision at the seventh ranked Adelphi Panthers.
AIC now stands at 10-6-0 on the year and 9-4-0 in Northeast-10 play.
Rain and wind pounded the players in the first half, and the slick conditions contributed to the first Panthers goal, as a shot into the box slipped out of the hands of sophomore goalkeeper
Mikayla Demanche; Adelphi forward Victoria Antonino pounced on the loose ball and passed it to fellow forward Morgan Santoro, who buried her conference-high twenty-first of the year in the twelfth minute.
AIC had a few chances in the half to score, but struggled to get quality chances on target. Sophomore forward
Federica Frew had a chance partially blocked in the middle of the box that represented AIC's top opportunity.
In the second half, Adelphi increased the lead, as forward Jeanine Nunez cut into the left side of the box and served a pass that was headed home by forward Erica Bleimeyer for her second of the season in the sixty-fourth minute. Antonino would add a breakaway goal late on a pass by midfielder Laura Gomez in the eighty-seventh minute.
A late-game desperation play by AIC would break the shutout as graduate back
Miko Iida connected a pass to freshman back
Alanna Gracia, who scored her first collegiate goal in the eighty-ninth minute. Junior midfielder
Linnea Herbertsson was also credited with an assist on the play.
In goal, Demanche made a pair of saves in the loss to fall to 2-1-0 on the year; both teams generated five shots on target.
AIC concludes their conference schedule with a match at Bentley Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
