Penfield Nets Lone Goal as Falcons Soar Past Field Hockey, 3-1

WALTHAM, Mass. Senior Ainslee Penfield (Greenfield, Mass.) scored the lone goal as American International College was defeated by Bentley, 3-1, in Northeast-10 Conference action this evening from Bentley Field.

The Jackets fall to 2-6 on the year and 1-3 in conference action while Bentley improves to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the NE-10.

The Falcons started quickly scoring in the 7th minute off a shot from senior Becca Moore (Belmont, Mass.) as she collected a centering pass in the middle for the 1-0 advantage.

AIC answered in the 13th minute as senior Ainslee Penfield (Greenfield, Mass.) blasted home her second goal of the season off a pass from junior Shea Homer (Glens Falls, N.Y.) for the 1-1 tie.

Bentley grabbed the lead back headed into the half as sophomore Taylor Kane (Bethlehem, Pa.) ripped in a shot from the top of the circle for the 2-1 edge in the 22nd minute.

Penfield had an early bid to tie the contest just over a minute into the second half, but sophomore Caitlin Derrickson (Lawrence, Mass.) made a crucial defensive save to keep the one-goal advantage.

The Falcons turned that around quickly to double the margin in the 47th minute as senior Kelsey Howard (Scarborough, Maine) found the back of the cage for the 3-1 score.

Bentley nearly added more insurance in the 55th minute as sophomore Sydney MacLeod (Hollis, N.H.) sent one on goal off a penalty corner, however, senior Kaylin Harbin (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) sacrificed her body for the defensive save.

The visitors were unable to muster any offense after that though as they didn't register a shot on goal over the final 33 minutes of play.

Freshman net-minder Taylor Ross (Stroudsburg, Pa.) stopped nine shots to fall to 1-3 with the setback while Falcon junior Evelyn Schaedel (Burlington, Vt.) made one save in the victory.

The hosts held the 15-6 edge in shots including the 12-3 advantage in shots on target while also holding the 9-3 margin in penalty corners.

AIC returns home for their next contest on Thursday at 7 p.m. when Assumption visits Ronald J. Abdow Field for a non-conference affair.
