WEST HAVEN, Conn.--A 75-minute long defensive struggle rapidly turned into a blowout as the American International College women's soccer team netted three goals in a 3:03 span to dispatch their conference rivals, the #25 New Haven Chargers, 3-0, in Northeast-10 play.
AIC improved to 2-3 overall with the victory, and moves to 1-1 in the NE-10.
The Yellow Jackets finally broke through New Haven as sophomore midfielder Linnea Herbertsson (Boras, Sweden) fed a stellar through ball to freshman forward Emilia Hed (Dalarna, Sweden), who struck for the go-ahead goal at 76:12. The tally that turned out to be the winning marker was Hed's first with AIC.
Only aminute and a halflater, the Chargers' goalkeeper committed a foul in the box, and senior captain Romina Bell (Stockerau, Austria) blasted the resulting penalty kick off the hands of the guilty goalkeeper and infor her second goal of the year, both on penalties, at 77:53.
The rout was on, and AIC drilled the final nail in the coffin when theymade it 3-0 at 79:15 on a beautiful give-and-go play in front between junior midfielder Jessica Margaretta (Coloniers, France) and freshman midfielder Johanna Nilsson (Ulricehamn, Sweden) that Margaretta finished with a shot into the left side of the net for her first goal of the season.
Graduate goalkeeper Rachel Edgin (Whitesboro, N.Y.) earned her first shutout at AIC and improved to 2-3, keeping up the theme of three with a trio of stops; her counterpart, sophomore Deandra Nash (Deer Park, N.Y.) made five denialsin the defeat.
AIC continues conference play Tuesday when they visit Assumption College for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
