Women's Tennis Stop the Charge, 5-4

WEST HAVEN, Conn. The American International College women's tennis team gave Head Coach Jamie Morrell his first win in a 5-4 victory at New Haven Sunday afternoon.

AIC senior Ana Paula Simoes (Brasilia, Brazil) finished her week 4-0 with a No. 1 singles and doubles victory Sunday against the Chargers. Simoes defeated her New Haven opponent, 6-0, 6-3 and teamed up with junior Isabela Daudt (Nova Hamburgo, Brazil) to claim first doubles, 8-2. Simoes' match was the deciding factor even after opening the first set with a 6-0 score as New Haven battled the whole way through.

Eleanna Fulop (Anixi-Attiki, Greece) and partner Whitney McKay (Corning, N.Y.) defeated their Charger counterparts, 9-7, McKay's first win of her career. McKay and classmate Callie Porcher (Chuluota, Fla.) both earned points at fourth and fifth singles, but fell in their matches.

"The tone was set during doubles ... Eleanna and Whitney went back and forth and battled for the win ... Eleanna served great today."

Daudt won in second singles 6-0, 6-1, while classmate Fulop earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory in No. 3 singles.

"We did what we had to do and everyone took care of business," said Morrell. "I am really proud of the way everyone played today, a team effort."

AIC returns to action Thursday, Sep. 17 at home against Assumption. First serve is slated for 3 p.m. at Central High.
