CALDWELL, N.J.--Senior captain Romina Bell (Stockerau, Austria) blasted home a penalty kick in the 84th minute to lead the American International College Women's Soccer team to a 2-1 win over the Caldwell Cougars.
AIC improves to 1-2-0 on the season.
In a 1-1 game that looked destined for extra time, sophomore forward Linnea Herbertsson (Boras, Sweden) fired a shot that was turned aside by the keeper, but the Cougars fouled as they scrambled to stop the rebound, giving AIC the ball on the spot with a chance to take the lead.
The captain, known for her high-powered shot, did not make a mistake, tickling the twine at 83:30 for her first of the season, and the defense carried the rest of the day by preventing so much as a single Caldwell shot attempt over the final six and a half minutes.
Both teams scored in rapid succession in the first half, with the Jackets opening the game's offensive output on a rebound goal by senior forward Alyssa Werbicki (Chicopee, Mass.) that was the result of a save on a free kick. The goal was her second of the year and came at 29:44.
Under five minutes later, however, Caldwell equalized, with freshman midfielder Amanda Wroblewski (North Babylon, N.Y.) directing a free kick into the cage for her first career goal at 34:21.
Freshman keeper Mary Kanzler (East Northport, N.Y.) absorbed the loss to fall to 0-4 despite eight stops for the home squad; AIC's graduate goalkeeper, Rachel Edgin (Whitesboro, N.Y.) made three saves in her first win with the Yellow Jackets.
AIC returns home and opens the Northeast-10 portion of their schedule when they host Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday. The game with the Penmen is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. Start time at Ronald J. Abdow Field.
