Baseball Edged by Nyack 9-4

LANTANA, Fla. Senior Dave Clark (W. Springfield, Mass.) collected three hits from the lead-off spot, but it was not enough as American International fell at the hands of Nyack, 9-4, in non-conference baseball action this afternoon at Santaluces High School.

The Warriors (2-9) opened the scoring in the bottom half of the second with a pair of runs capped off by an RBI single by sophomore Jack Hudak (Pittsburgh, Pa.).

The Jackets (1-6) responded in the fourth scoring three times to take the 3-2 lead. Senior David Kerlejza (Unionville, Conn.) and junior Brett Bohl (Ludlow, Mass.) ripped run-producing singles while freshman Chris Starcun (Easthampton, Mass.) collected an RBI double.

Nyack grabbed the lead again in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run single from senior Brent James (Seligman, Ariz.) for the 4-3 advantage but, AIC came right back in the top of the sixth as junior Eddie Ritch (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) blasted a two-out RBI double to centerfield for the 4-4 tie.

However, a wild pitch and sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the frame gave the lead right back to the Warriors who then added a single tally in the seventh and two more in the eighth for the final score.

Sophomore Brian Karp (Bellmore, N.Y.) took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year after tossing six innings surrendering six runs on seven hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts while freshman Jack Kelley (Coral Springs, Fla.) collected the victory in relief after throwing 5.1 innings allowing just one run on five hits while fanning six.

The Jackets were outhit 11-9 and saw Bohl and Ritch each collect a pair of hits while Clark led the way going 3-for-5.

AIC wraps up their Florida trip with a twin-bill against Bloomfield tomorrow starting at 11 a.m.
