Women's Basketball Drops P.R.-Rio Piedras, 68-35

BAYAMON, P.R. The American International College women's basketball team swarmed the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras in a dominant nonconference win Thursday afternoon, 68-35.

With the win AIC improves to 10-0 overall, while with the loss Rio Piedras falls to 0-8 on the season.

The Yellow Jackets were firing out of the gates, scoring the final 20 points of the first quarter to take a commanding 22-4 lead into the second stanza. Senior guard, Brianna Bishop (Suffield, Conn.), rattled off 11 straight points in the quarter including knocking down three straight trey's to help AIC jump out to a 15-4 lead midway through the frame.

The Yellow jackets continued the dominance into the second quarter, outscoring the Gallitos, 17-7, to take a 39-11 advantage into the halftime break. Bishop scored 11 of her game-high 16 points in the first half off 4-5 shooting.

Rio Piedras opened the second half with the first five points before AIC freshman Jayda Gilmore (Elkridge, Md.) laid it in and Bishop knocked down another from behind the arc to erase the Gallitos momentum.

American International dominated on the glass, outrebounding Rio Piedras, 67-30 led by senior Sydney Tepley's (Racine, Wis.) eight boards. Senior Danielle Dorsett (Waterbury, Conn.), junior Tanisha Moyer (Albion, N.Y.) and Dana Watts (Rochester, N.Y.) grabbed seven rebounds apiece. Watts also chipped in 12 points off the bench.

The Yellow Jackets forced 16 Gallitos turnovers, turning them into 28 points. The AIC bench also outscored Rio Piedras, 37-22.

AIC returns after the Holiday on Wednesday, Dec. 30 when they travel to Dominican for a non-conference clash with the Chargers. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
