Women's Basketball Defeats P.R.-Bayamon, 61-51

BAYAMON, P.R. The American International College women's basketball team took down the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon Wednesday afternoon, 61-51.

With the win AIC improves to 9-0 overall, while with the loss Bayamon falls to 3-4 on the season.

The Yellow Jackets used a dominant performance on the glass to take care of the host Cowboys, outrebounding Bayamon 57-36. Both junior Imani Stepney (Willingboro, N.J.) and senior Kamika Mason (Long Beach, Calif.) notched double digit rebound totals, corralling 11 and 10 respectively.

AIC used a 14-8 second quarter to gap the Cowboys into the halftime locker room, 33-22. Jacket senior Brianna Bishop (Suffield, Conn.) score 13 of her game-high 16 points in the opening half propelled by 3-5 shooting from beyond the arc.

In the third, American International opened with a 12-3 run over the first 7:15 of play and held Bayamon to just seven points for the entire quarter. Senior Sydney Tepley (Racine, Wis.) bookended that 12-3 run with a pair of buckets, while AIC ended the quarter on a 6-0 run sparked by five from freshman reserve Alyssa Guyon (Ludlow, Mass.).

Bayamon attempted to claw their way back in the final frame, outscoring the Yellow jackets 22-10 in the final 10 minutes, but Annelisse Vargas' layup with five seconds left to bring it within 10 was the closest the Cowboys came in the second half.

Bishop, along with freshman Dana Watts (Rochester, N.Y.) and her 10 points were the only Jackets in double figures as AIC shot 32.3 percent from the floor. Watts also grabbed seven boards, while Tepley chipped in six points and eight rebounds. The Jackets notched 21 second chance points in a game they never trailed.

AIC returns to action back in Puerto Rico Thursday, Dec. 17 against the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
