PITTSBURGH, Pa. The American International College men's hockey squad looks to get their first win of the season and it would be their first-ever win against a ranked opponent as they travel to No. 20 Robert Morris for a weekend set.
SETTING THE SCENE: AIC was swept in a weekend series at home against defending league champion RIT by scores of 4-2 and 6-2 last weekend while Robert Morris nearly swept #10 Michigan as they led 3-1 after two periods on Friday night before the Wolverines scored four third period goals. However, the Colonials came out on Saturday firing on all cylinders and recorded a 4-0 shutout victory to split the series.
LAST TIME THEY MET: The two schools met four times last season with Bobby Mo going 3-0-1 against the Jackets including sweeping them 5-3 and 9-4 at 84 Lumber Arena in January.
OH FOR OCTOBER: AIC is still searching for their first victory of the 2015-16 season as they finished the month of October 0-8. This marks the worst start to a season for the Yellow Jackets since starting 0-12 to begin the 2006-07 campaign. Things aren't getting any easier for the Jackets either as they face the 20th ranked Colonials of Robert Morris for a weekend set.
PLENTY TWENTY: Almost one year to the date the Colonials and Yellow Jackets faced off in West Springfield with RMU being ranked 20th as well. The teams skated to a 5-5 tie on Friday evening marking just the second time in the program's Division I era that AIC picked up a point against a nationally ranked opponent. Sophomore Andrew DeBrincat assisted on three tallies while junior Austin Orszulak recorded a goal and an assist. Sophomore Johno May also lit the lamp for AIC while Alexander MacMillan '15 recorded a pair of scores.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Bobby Mo is 13-3-3 all-time against AIC dating back to 2008 when they defeated the Jackets 10-2 in the first-ever meeting between the schools. The Colonials also hold a 2-8-2 record in Atlantic Hockey play since 2010 when they joined the league after the CHA disbanded.
ROOKIE SENSATION: Freshman Shawn McBride has been sensational so far this season for AIC as their first-line center. He is the reigning Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week after totalling four points in three games with a pair of goals and assists. He did switch linemates this past weekend and it opened him up for three points against RIT. He showed some fancy stickwork on Friday night for a goal as he stole the puck in the neutral zone and went forehand, backhand, forehand and finished five-hole for a score.
SPECIAL TEAMS STRUGGLES: AIC continues to stifle on both the PP and PK only scoring 3 times in 22 chances and only stopping the opposition 8-of-23 times. While their PK is tied for last in the league with Niagara their PP is surprisingly above RIT Air Force and Niagara. RMU, however, ranks second in the league in PP (6/23) and tied-third for PK (18/21).
LIGHT THE LAMP: AIC has given up the most goals in the conference (47) while RMU has scored the second most (26). The Jackets have struggled to stop their opponents in the first and second frames allowing 18 in each while the Colonials have scored ten times in each period this season. AIC also enjoys first period success scoring nine times in the opening period.
FAST START, SLOW FINISH: So far this season AIC has scored the opening goal of the game in four contests even holding two-goal leads on a pair of occasions. But they are being outscored 18-3 in the second period so far this season.
ROAD WARRIORS: AIC has already traveled over 10,000 miles this season with trips to UNH, Alaska and Penn State and all told the Jackets will travel 18,758 miles this season for road contests. This trip marks the third longest of the season for AIC after Alaska and Air Force next semester.
SCOUTING THE COLONIALS: Greg Gibson leads the conference and is tied for the national lead in points (13) and is tied for the AHC lead in both goals (6) and assists (7). Zac Lynch is second in the AHC in points with nine thanks to four goals and five helpers. Lynch also paces the conference with a +10 as RMU is outscoring their opponents 26-14 so far this season. Goaltender Dalton Izyk also sits atop the league in save percentage (.961) and goals against average (1.30). Those marks also rank the junior fourth and sixth in the nation, respectively.
