Ice Hockey Set To Host Sacred Heart in Mid-Week Affair

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Riding high off a weekend split with No. 20 nationally ranked Robert Morris, the AIC hockey team returns home for a weekday affair with Sacred Heart University this evening at 7:05 p.m. from the Olympia Ice Center.

The Yellow Jackets look to avenge a loss to the Pioneers just two weeks ago on their home opener.

LAST TIME OUT: AIC split a weekend series with #20 Robert Morris over the weekend capturing their first win of the season during a 3-2 triumph on Friday night before falling 7-1 on Saturday. Sophomore Johno May turned in a three point weekend including a pair of goals on Friday while freshman Travis Douglas netted the game-winner.

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Friday night's victory marked the first time in program history that AIC has beaten a nationally ranked opponent and just the third time they have earned points against a team in the top 20. A 1-1 tie to #16 RPI during the 2007-2008 season and a 5-5 tie last season against this same RMU team mark the only other occasions where AIC took points from a ranked foe. Bobby Mo was also ranked #20 during the meeting last season.

MAGNIFICIENT MURRAY: Sophomore goaltender Alex Murray played out of his mind making 44 stops in the Friday night victory. This marks the seventh time in his career he has recorded 40 plus saves and he remains unbeaten sporting a 3-0-4 record when he accomplishes this feat. Last season he went 2-0-4 when making 40 plus saves including 53 in his collegiate debut during a 2-2 tie at Holy Cross.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Sacred Heart came into the Olympia two weeks ago on AIC's home opener and walked away with a 4-1 victory. Coltyn Hansen scored twice for the Pioneers while freshman Shawn McBride recorded the lone goal for the Yellow Jackets.

ABOUT AIC: May, McBride and junior Austin Orszulak pace the Jacket scoring attack with eight points each. May and McBride have each registered four goals so far this season while Orszulak has three and leads the team with five assists.

ABOUT SHU: Sacred Heart split a home-and-home with Holy Cross this past weekend with each team winning on their home ice. The Pioneers improve to 4-3-1 overall and 3-2-0 in conference. Evan Jasper and Justin Danforth lead the team with three goals and three assists each. Freshman Brett Magnus has been sensational between the pipes so far for SHU as he has started in all eight games posting a 1.74 GAA and a .928 Save percentage. Those marks rank him second and third in the conference and 12th and 18th in the nation, respectively.

POWER-PLAY: AIC moved up to fourth in Atlantic Hockey in PP after this weekend as they are now 6/32 (18.8%) after going 3/10 this past weekend. However, Sacred Heart has the number one PK in the league at 90.9% (30/33).

UP NEXT: AIC has the weekend off before traveling to Niagara on the 20th and 21st for a weekend set after sweeping the Purple Eagles last season.
