Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Paige Montague Sets the Pace in Field Hockey's, 1-0 Overtime Victory

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. Sophomore Paige Montague (Brewster, N.Y.) nets the Golden Goal in the 81st minute to give American International College the, 1-0, victory over Pace in Northeast-10 field hockey action this afternoon from Peter X. Finnerty Field.

The Jackets improve to 3-8 on the year and 2-4 in conference play while the Setters fall to 2-8 overall and 0-5 in the NE-10.

AIC nearly opened the scoring in the 20th minute as senior Ainslee Penfield (Greenfield, Mass.) ripped a shot that was turned aside keeping the contest scoreless.

Penfield had another chance in the 24th minute as senior Kaylin Harbin (Stroudsburg, Pa.) raced up the right side of the circle and fed it in front, but her shot was kicked away by Setter sophomore Lesly Sanchez Alvarez (Stamford, Conn.).

Then in the 33rd minute the Jackets had a pair of chances off a penalty corner as senior Erica McLean (Branford, Conn.) laced a shot from just inside the circle that Alvarez closed the pads on and the rebound found Paige Montague but her bid was also turned aside keeping the game scoreless headed into the intermission.

The teams opened the second stanza with a bit of back-and-forth action as neither team could get an edge on their opponent. Pace ultimately began to control possession late in the half and freshman Jessica D'Angelo (Holbrook, N.Y.) nearly gave the hosts the 1-0 lead in the 59th minute, but senior Emily Kollar (Lehighton, Pa.) sacrificed her body for the defensive save to preserve the 0-0 score.

The Setters then had back-to-back chances with less than five minutes to play in the game, but freshman Taylor Ross (Stroudsburg, Pa.) made some crucial saves to keep the game in hand.

The Jackets almost capitalized as they flipped the field and were awarded a penalty corner on the other end and diagrammed a great play.

Junior Shea Homer (Glens Falls, N.Y.) inserted the ball that was set by Harbin and taken by Kollar. The senior then played give-and-go with McLean before sending a shot toward cage that was blocked down and the game went into overtime.

Pace had a great chance in overtime as in the 80 th minute freshman Samantha Gray (Greenlawn, N.Y.) ripped a shot that was blocked, but the rebound found freshman Quirine van der Meijs (Hilversum, The Netherlands) and Ross stuffed that bid.

American International came back the other way off a break out in the seven-versus-seven overtime format and it was sophomore classmates Liv Magni (Sweet Valley, Pa.) Paige Montague hooking up for the score in the 81st minute.

Magni fired on target from the right of the circle and was stuffed as the rebound bounced right to Monatgue's stick on the left and she pushed the ball into the empty cage for the Golden Goal and the 1-0 victory.

Ross stopped seven shots while improving to 2-5 on the season with the shutout while Alvarez made nine saves and fell to 2-5 on the year in the setback.

AIC held slim lead in shots on goal 10-7 but were outshot overall 17-16 by the Setters who also enjoyed 12-5 edge in penalty corners.

The Jackets return home for their next contest on Saturday as they host Merrimack in an NE-10 contest at 1 p.m.
