SPRINGFIELD, Mass. The American International College field hockey team wrapped up the 2015 slate with a non-conference win over Mercy Saturday evening at Abdow Field on Senior Day, 2-1.
With the win AIC ends the season 4-14 overall, while with the loss Mercy will end the season 6-10.
AIC controlled the first half, possessing the ball on their end for majority of the first 35 minutes and holding the Mavericks to zero shots.
Yellow Jacket junior Taylor Ruscillo (Carle Place, N.Y.) broke onto the board in the 30th minute off a well-played penalty corner. Senior Kaylin Harbin (Stroudsburg, Pa.) set up Ruscillo for her fifth goal of the season, giving AIC a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.
Eight minutes out of the break, senior Erica McLean (Branford, Conn.) dished it ahead to Ruscillo in the middle of the field who sent it to the back of the net for her second of the day and sixth of the season. With that goal she jumped McLean for the team lead, while both players finished the year with 15 points.
Mercy made it interesting in the 53rd minute when junior Jackie Ballin slipped one past AIC senior net-minder Erin Maroney (Chicopee, Mass.) to bring the game back within a goal, 2-1.
AIC regained control and looked to cruise to victory, but on a breakaway downfield with under 30 seconds to go, Jacket junior Lizz Moulton (Hiram, Maine) stepped in front of a charging Maverick and stifled any shot attempt to preserve the American International victory and prevent Mercy from spoiling senior day.
The Yellow Jackets outshot Mercy 28-8 for the game and 14-4 on target. Maroney picked up her first career win while making three saves. McLean notched a team-high eight shots, six of them on cage.
