MANCHESTER, N.H. The American International College women's soccer team extends its unbeaten streak to seven games as they defeated Saint Anselm, 2-1, in Northeast-10 action this evening from Grappone Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets improve to 9-4-1 on the season and 7-2-1 in conference play while the Hawks fall to 7-6-1 overall and 6-4-0 in the NE-10.
After a very stagnant first half of action with the teams feeling each other out and playing mostly between the thirties, combining for just five shots and only one of those on target, AIC stepped up the intensity in the second stanza.
The Jackets nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 52nd minute as senior Alyssa Werbicki (Chicopee, Mass.) corralled a bouncing ball in the box and was one-on-one with the goalie, but her shot attempt was stuffed keeping the contest 0-0.
AIC did get on the board first later in the half as senior Romina Bell (Stockerau, Austria) fed a great corner kick from the right side to the far post that was headed home by junior Jessica Margaretta (Coloniers, France) for the 1-0 edge in the 64th minute.
Freshman Johanna Nilsson (Ulricehamn, Sweden) pushed the score to 2-0 as a bouncing ball cleared to the top of the box by Werbicki found her foot and she blasted one into the top right corner from 15 yards out in the 71st minute.
Saint Anselm would get on the board with just 21 seconds remaining to break the shutout streak as off a corner kick sophomore Alexis Elowitch (Portland, Maine) received the ball on the right post and kicked high for the goal and 2-1 final.
Graduate Student Rachel Edgin (Whitesboro, N.Y.) recorded four saves, but saw her shutout streak end at 663:01 while her counterpart, Cassie Quattropani (East Hartford, Conn.), recorded three saves in the setback to fall to 5-7-1 on the year.
The Hawks held the slim 11-10 edge in shots while each team recorded five on target and the Jackets held the 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
AIC returns to action on Tuesday as they travel to Franklin Pierce University for a 6 p.m. affair.
