WALTHAM, Mass. American International College senior point guard Bobby Harris (Berlin, N.J.) hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 21 seconds to go as the men's basketball team hung on for a Northeast-10 road victory at Bentley Saturday afternoon at the Dana Center, 84-77.
With the win AIC improves to 12-3 overall and 7-2 in NE-10 play. The seven league wins is one more than they had all of last season (6-14). With the loss, Bentley drops to 10-6 and 5-5 in NE-10 action.
The Falcons tied up the Yellow Jackets five times in the second half including matching a 5-0 AIC run with their own to knot up the score at 75 all. Harris put the Jackets back up for good, knocking down a 3-pointer with 44 seconds to go, his fifth from beyond the arc in the game.
On the ensuing Bentley possession, AIC junior Trahmier Burrell (Albany, N.Y.) came away with the defensive rebound off a Keegan Hyland miss, and was fouled. Burrell hit both to extend the lead back to five with 21 seconds left, 80-75.
One week after a poor free throw shooting performance in a three point, double overtime loss to Southern New Hampshire, AIC went 12-for-15 from the charity stripe including converting all six freebies in the final minute of play. Junior Cameron Dobbs (Albany, N.Y.) and Harris found the bottom of the net on all four free throws attempted in the final nine seconds.
The game was not always close. American International led by as many 16 in the first half, but Bentley clawed back within eight, closing the half on a 14-6 run.
Harris scored 17 of his 31 in the opening frame off 6-of-9 shooting and 3-of-5 from long range. The 31 points ties a season-high for Harris. Dobbs netted 19 while Burrell chipped in 16, 11 points coming in the second half. Burrell was 6-for-7 from the field as AIC shot 47.8 percent for the game.
Bentley was led by Tyler McFarland's 28 points off 9-of-14 shooting.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Wednesday, Jan. 21 when they travel to Merrimack College. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
