Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Shows No Mercy In Defeating The Mavericks, 2-0

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. Senior Jenna Masionis (Ashland, Mass.) registered a goal and an assist to help lead the American International College Yellow Jackets past Mercy, 2-0, in non-conference field hockey action this afternoon.

With the win AIC improves to 3-2 on the year while the Mavericks fall to 0-4 in the setback.

The Yellow Jackets started early as it was once again sophomore Taylor Ruscillo (Carle Place, N.Y.) who started the scoring in the 23rd minute when she corralled a through ball from Masionis and deposited it into the back of the cage for the 1-0 edge.

This marks the fourth game so far this season that Ruscillo has set the tone for the AIC offense scoring the first goal as she has registered a goal in three straight games and has four overall to lead the team.

Masionis potted a goal of her own just five minutes later as she was able to dribble past the keeper and slap the ball into the open net for the 2-0 score headed into the intermission.

With her three points on the day Masionis now ties Ruscillo for the team lead with eight as she has three goals and two helpers on the year.

The Black and Gold came out of the half keeping the momentum and had chances to build on their lead as junior Kaylin Harbin (Stroudsburg, Pa.) and Masionis each fired shots on net in the first five minutes only to be denied by Mercy freshman goalkeeper Olivia Kelly (West Islip, N.Y.) to keep the contest at 2-0.

AIC outshot their opponents 28-13 and 12-7 on goal while the Mavericks held the 11-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Kelly registered 10 saves in the defeat while junior Ainslee Penfield (Greenfield, Mass.) stopped seven shots in registering her second consecutive shutout on the year.

American International resumes their schedule in one week's time as they return home to take on Adelphi in a non-conference tilt on Saturday at 1 p.m. while Mercy travels to Adelphi on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. affair.
