Baseball splits, takes series from Pace

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. The American International baseball team split with Pace University in a crucial Northeast-10 Southwest Divisional doubleheader Sunday at AIC Park, winning 7-4 and falling 4-1 in the finale.

With the split AIC moves to 14-23 and 6-8 in the Southwest Division, while Pace becomes 12-21 overall and 5-9 in divisional play.

On senior day, Matt Lee (Stratford, Conn.) took the mound in game one and came away with the win. Lee went seven, striking out three, and allowed three earned on 10 hits, moving to 1-1 in five starts in his final season.

After a quiet offensive day for both sides in yesterday's series opener, the Yellow Jackets wasted no time getting runs on the board Sunday. In the first, first baseman Lucas Vallas (East Northport, N.Y.) singled to center field to plate senior Cam MacDonald (Weymouth, Mass.). Classmate Dan Asselin (Chicopee, Mass.) made it 2-0, scoring on an error.

Graduate Dan Fenton (Agawam, Mass.) started off the four-run second with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring sophomore shortstop Eddie Ritch (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.). Vallas knocked in two more, while Asselin hit an RBI to center for a six run cushion after two.

Pace chipped away at the lead with three in the fourth, but could never catch the Jackets.

Kevin Wnukowski (Douglas, Mass.) picked up the save, striking out two to preserve the AIC win. Freshman third baseman Justin Carey (Amherst, Mass.) recorded his second multi-hit game in-a-row, batting 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Yellow Jackets got it going first in game two. Sophomore Brett Bohl (Ludlow, Mass.) sent David Kerlezja (Unionville, Conn.) home for AIC's lone run. Bohl finished the game 2-for-3. Asselin also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4.

Freshman starter Michael Gentile (Windsor Locks, Conn.) went 6.1 innings, giving up two earned and striking out four in the loss.

Setter starter Dylan Mouzakes (Dix Hills, N.Y.) went the distance, allowing one earned off seven hits and throwing over 120 pitches.

AIC returns to action Tuesday, April 29 at home against non-conference Mercy College. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
