Baseball bested by Barry, 20-8

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. American International freshman catcher Garrett Demers (Cranston, R.I.) knocked in three runs and scored two himself, but the Yellow Jackets fell to Barry University 20-8 Wednesday evening.

With the loss AIC falls to 4-3, while the Buccaneers improved to 16-6 with the win.

The Yellow Jackets got on the board first when sophomore Mike Coyne (El Cajon, Calif.) singled to right center, plating senior Cam MacDonald (Weymouth, Mass.) from third.

The lead was short lived as the Bucs J.C. Cardenas blasted a two-run homer over the right field wall, starting a four-run first.

Demers would lead off the second with a triple before classmate Justin Carey (Amherst, Mass.) hit a sac fly to center, sending him home.

AIC starting pitcher, senior Daniel Guerrero (Elizabeth, N.J.) would get out of the second unscathed, but put two on with no outs before freshman Taze Piccard came in relief. Barry added six in the inning, leaving the inning with an eight run edge.

Demers finished 2-of-5 from the plate, both hits being triples. MacDonald went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Andy Cherico (Rehoboth, Mass.) reached base in all four plate appearances.

The Buccaneers hit five homers from five different batters, while five different pitchers totaled 12 strike outs.

The Yellow Jackets battle Adelphi from Lantana, Fla. at noon, Thursday, March 13.
