Baseball drops Deacons, 7-4

LANTANA, Fla. The American International baseball team survived a late Bloomfield rally in a 7-4 win Tuesday afternoon.

With the win AIC improves to 4-2 overall, while the loss drops Bloomfield to 0-5.

The Yellow Jackets added two insurance runs in the visitor half of the ninth inning. After Bloomfield loaded the bases, senior Dan Asselin (Chicopee, Mass.) drew a walk, sending freshman Justin Carey (Amherst, Mass.) home. With the next at bat, sophomore Mike Coyne (El Cajon, Calif.) hit an RBI sacrifice fly scoring Cam MacDonald (Weymouth, Mass.), extending the AIC lead to 7-2.

The Deacons would add two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but a double-play started by sophomore shortstop Eddie Ritch (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) ended any hope of Bloomfield walk-off.

Bloomfield got on the board first in the bottom of the first, plating two runs off Derek Azzopardi (Redwood City, Calif.), one earned. Azzopardi would find a groove and end with five scoreless innings.

MacDonald hit 2-of-4 with two runs and walk, while Crudale also went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI's. Dan Fenton (Agawam, Mass.) also had a good day at the plate, hitting 3-of-5 and knocking in two runs.

Azzopardi won the decision, striking out four, walking five and allowing the one earned run. Sophomore right hander Kevin Arduino (Cornwall, N.Y.) and MacDonald combined for 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

The Yeloow Jackets return to action tomorrow, March 12 when they travel to Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla. First pitch set to go out at 6 p.m.
