SETTING THE SCENE: The Southwest Division fifth seeded Yellow Jackets travel to Manchester, N.H. to face the Northeast Division's fourth seeded Penmen of Southern New Hampshire in the opening round of the Northeast-10 Basketball Championship.
THE SERIES: SNHU leads the all-time series 22-10. The Yellow Jackets fell in Manchester 77-60. Senior point guard Spencer Braithwaite (Dorcester, Mass.) led the team with 12 points and four helpers. Classmate Jason Perrier (Brdigeport, Conn.) and junior Marcus Porter (New Castle, Del.) chipped in 11 apiece. Penmen Elijah Bonsignore shot 9-of-14 for a game-high 21 points.
SCOUTING SNHU: The 2013 NE-10 Championships start their title defense Friday. Rodney Sanders leads the Penmen with 14.0 points-per-game. Chris Walters and CJ Marriro notch 9.6 and 9.0 ppg respectively. SNHU is recording 73.0 ppg while only allowing 68.7.
THE YELLOW JACKETS: Junior forward Marcus Porter (New Castle, Del.) is averaging 13.3 ppg and shooting over 50 percent from the field. Senior guard Janek Schmidkunz (Berlin, Germany) has net a single-season high 79 three-pointers and sits seven behind the programs all-time leading three-pointers made. Sophomore forward Oscar Assie (Ansonia, Conn.) has stepped it up inside, grabbing an average of 4.4 rebounds-per-game.
NEXT UP: The winner travels to the Southwest No. 1 seed Southern Connecticut on Sunday at 3 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
