Porter leads MBB with 19, but drops decision at New Haven, 68-57

WEST HAVEN, Conn. American International junior forward Marcus Porter (New Castle, Del.) net 15 second half points, but the Chargers dropped the Yellow Jackets 68-57 in a Northeast-10 showdown at Charger Gymnasium Wednesday.

With the loss AIC falls to 9-16 and 6-12 in conference play, while with the win New Haven improves to 18-7 overall and 13-6 in the NE-10.

With AIC down 33-23 at the half, Porter took over in the second, shooting 6-of-7 from the floor for 15 points and grabbing seven rebounds after the break.

With just over 13 minutes to play, Porter hit a three and after forcing a Charger turnover, laid it in to bring the Jackets back within two, but that would be as close as they would come as New Haven led from the opening tip.

Porter finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Seniors Jason Perrier (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Janek Schmidkunz (Berlin, Germany) net 11 and 10 respectively.

Sophomore forward Oscar Assis (Ansonia, Conn.) scored six of his eight points in the first half and tallied seven boards.

New Haven's Justin Exum led all-scoring with 21 as the Chargers shot 44 percent from the floor as a team. Eric Anderson had a 16 point, 15 rebound performance to help keep New Haven out front.

The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday, Feb. 22 when they host Le Moyne on Senior Day. Tip-off is slated for 3:30 p.m., but prior to the game Perrier, Schmidkunz, Spencer Braithwaite (Dorcester, Mass.), and D.J. Gutridge (Neptune, N.J.) will be recognized for their careers at American International in their final home game.
