Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Wins Fourth Straight in 3-2 Victory Over Bentley

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Senior Jenna Masionis (Ashland, Mass.) continued her stellar play netting a pair of goals and adding an assist to help lead American International College past Bentley, 3-2, in Northeast-10 field hockey action this evening at Abdow Field.

With the victory the Yellow Jackets collect their fourth consecutive victory and move to 8-6 on the year and 4-3 in conference play leapfrogging them into fifth place in the standings while the Falcons fall to 6-8 overall and 2-5 in the NE-10.

Both squads traded chances all half as momentum swung back-and-forth for the first 35 minutes of play.

Masionis broke the scoreless tie in the 19 th minute as she registered an unassisted tally for her 13th of the year for the 1-0 score.

Bentley fought back and potted the equalizer in the 27th minute when junior Meghan Talerman (Centerville, Mass.) sent one on net that squeaked through the goalkeeper for the 1-1 tie.

The Yellow Jackets kept the pressure on and grabbed the momentum back as Masionis sent a pass from the left of the circle to sophomore Taylor Ruscillo (Carle Place, N.Y.) and her shot went just wide of the left post keeping the score tied.

Just minutes later, however, that same combination struck as Masionis sent a pass to the left post where a diving Ruscillo was able to jam it home for the 2-1 edge headed into the intermission.

For the first half of the final stanza neither team gained an advantage as the game was primarily played in the midfield.

Then Masionis corralled a rebound in front off an initial shot from senior Amanda Johannes (Killingworth, Conn.) and finished five-hole on the goalie for the 3-1 advantage in the 56th minute.

Masionis had another bid at a goal just three minutes later but her shot was stopped by sophomore Tori Ellis (Madison, N.J.) who made the defensive save keeping it a two-goal game.

Bentley turned things around again and made a bid to cut the deficit in half as senior Gina Lirange (Auburn, Mass.) registered back-to-back shots from point blank range in the 67th minute only to be stonewalled by Jacket junior net-minder Ainslee Penfield (Greenfield, Mass.) on both occasions to preserve the AIC lead.

However, the Falcons did find the net about one minute later as junior Becca Moore (Belmont, Mass.) played give-and-go with Lirange on a penalty corner and Lirange flicked a shot high over the goalie's shoulder for the 3-2 score.

Then with just seconds remaining Bentley was awarded another penalty corner and with no time left on the clock the insertion was played. After a few missed attempts to clear the ball out of the circle by the Jackets, Ellis fired a shot from the left but Penfield made the stop and AIC cleared the ball to end the game.

Penfield recorded nine saves in the victory while Bentley junior Katie Kelley (Walpole, Mass.) made three saves in the setback.

American International outshot the visitors 16-13, but were outshot on goal 11-6 and each team had eight penalty corners.

AIC returns to action Tuesday as they welcome the Greyhounds of Assumption College to Abdow Field for a 7 p.m. affair.
