GARDEN CITY, N.Y.-The American International College field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to the seventh-ranked Adelphi Panthers in Northeast-10 play on Long Island.
AIC now sits at 4-5 on the season overall and 0-2 in the NE-10.
The Panthers scored early on in the match on a penalty corner, as junior midfielder Molly Cuevas (San Jose, Calif.) set up a shot by sophomore midfielder Rachel Colvin (Vernon, N.J.) that found the back of the net for her second of the season at 3:28.
That score stood for the rest of the first half despite a flurry of chances for the Panthers as junior goalkeeper
Ainslee Penfield (Greenfield, Mass.) stood tall in the cage, including a string of four saves in a one-minute span; up through the fiftieth minute she recorded 11 stops.
Then, midway through the second frame, the Jackets tied the game. Junior midfielder
Kaylin Harbin (Stroudsburg, Pa.) was awarded a penalty stroke, and converted it for her first of the year at 51:49. It was the fifth goal on a penalty stroke in her career.
However, the Panthers struck back as Colvin scored again at 58:16 shortly after a penalty corner, netting her third of the campaign and ultimately the game-winning goal.
AIC had a golden opportunity to tie the game on a corner late, but senior forward
Jenna Masionis (Ashland, Mass.) was stopped in front by junior goalkeeper Kelly Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.).
Penfield had a total of 13 saves in the loss to fall to 4-5 on the season, while Serrao stopped four shots in the win to improve to 6-2 for the campaign.
The Jackets continue conference play Friday, October 17 when they head to Merrimack for a 7:00 p.m. tilt with the Warriors.
